Managing Pain Naturally

Women can significantly reduce the amount of pain during labor by natural methods.  View pain in labor for what it is - normal, healthy, productive, intermittent, ending with the ecstasy of your baby's birth.

  • Prayer, Positive confessions.

  • Familiarize yourself with the place of birth. Know what's available to you.

  • Adjust lighting and temperature to your comfort.

  • Participate actively in decision making.

  • Music- soft and relaxing for first stage, energizing for second stage.

  • Candles, incense, aromatherapy, oils, and nature items that give you comfort like smooth rocks or sticks.

  • Eat and drink to maintain strength.

  • One to one care providers to help you plan management when labor is long.

  • Surround yourself with family and friends support system.

  • Deep abdominal breathing into the contraction and breathing out at the end of the contraction enables her to reduce pain and can even help the baby move down through the pelvic bones.

  • Sounding vocally may release tension and help the expectant mom to relax.

  • Walking and squatting use gravity to aid in the progress of labor.

  • Warm baths and showers may aid in the woman's relaxation, therefore enabling labor to progress.

  • Cool or warm compresses, massage, reflexology, acupressure or counter-pressure all may assist a woman in labor to actively reduce her pain.
